We’ve had the honor of putting together a 18 minute documentary piece on Sony’s HD re-release of the Jak and Daxter trilogy. It’s always a treat to go back to Naughty Dog and talk to the people there, and this time around the studio was visited by the founders Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin. Andy and Jason look back at their time with Naughty Dog and how far the company has come since they departed, all while playing Jak HD in the studios screening room. Neither had played the game since it’s original release 10 years ago, and seeing it now in HD brought back some powerful memories.

Double Fine Documentary Series

By now there is a good chance you have heard about the Double Fine Adventure. It’s the biggest story in the gaming press so far this year, plastered across major news sites and personal blogs around the whole web. But it’s not just gaming news, it’s real news. TV stations are talking about this. The financial sector is looking at what has happened. Literally overnight, what seemed like a modest pitch for a 400k project exploded into a multimillion dollar statement about the modern games industry. There is the way that things have always been done, but now there is an ever growing list of new alternatives.

We're proud to announce that we've partnered with industry legend Tim Schafer and Double Fine Productions for our most ambitious project to date. "The Double Fine Adventure" is a Kickstarter campaign to raise funding for Double Fine to create a new adventure game while we document the entire process from beginning to end. To the best of our knowledge this is something that has never been done before.

New Dataport Videos

Back in the early days of 2 Player Productions (circa 2007), our bread and butter was producing videos from live chip music performances. We probably made about a hundred of them, with a good portion collected on the Blip Festival 2006 and 2007 dvd releases. We don't have the time to work with the chip scene like we use to since we moved away from the east coast and took on other projects, but we're still trying to keep the spirit alive by hosting our own bi-monthly chip shows here in Portland.

This month we're featuring two pillars of the Philly chip scene, Animal Style and Cheap Dinosaurs, who will be supported by Oregon native Dakota Clark. Just In case you missed our previous show, we now have some videos up for Bud Melvin and Covox.

During our time filming at Mojang for the Minecraft documentary, we had the chance to cover the development of another game that was taking place alongside of Minecraft. This game, which would eventually come to be named "Scrolls", would be the main focus of Jakob Porser, long time friend of Markus "Notch" Persson and co-founder of the company.

Concieved by Jakob and Markus durning their time working together at King.com, the idea for Scrolls became a reality when Minecraft's success led to the founding of Mojang. While Markus continued to work on Minecraft, Jakob would lead the development of Scrolls. He would soon be joined by Markus 'Junkboy' Toivonen, Daniel Frisk, Mattis Grahm, and Henrik Pettersson. The tactical card game would feature detailed art and 2D animation, a drastic change from the blocky open world of Minecraft.

The Scrolls documentary will be a multi-part series chronicling the stages of the games developement, as well as the hardships faced by Mojang along the way.

We have two new shirts available in the 2 Player merch store, both are designs born from the DVD release of "Reformat the Planet" and our talented friends at Fangamer.

"RTPdj" is blue art on a black shirt in the style of the LSDj logo found on the quenisential gameboy music making cartridge. In a classy homage to the other premier gameboy music software Nanoloop, we have the "Formatloop" shirt with pink graphics on grey. Both are quality American apparel shirts with front and back printing.

These are the first shirts we've had to support a project, and since it's something of an experiment they are super limited. Like really, really limited! Maybe if we sell out of them today we'll see about doing another run, or maybe we'll try a different design. Would anyone be interested in getting a 2PP logo t-shirt? Let us know!

Infamous 2 from Sucker Punch Studios is now availalble in stores. We had a lot of fun working with the guys at Sucker Punch on the BTS videos for the first Infamous, and we managed to revisit them early on in the development of Infamous 2 to do a special piece on the comic origins of the series. The piece was made special for release at Comic-Con, but afterwards it may have been overlooked due to being released at the same time the "Cole with Hair" character redesign controversy was taking place.

It remains a piece that we're proud of, so if you've picked the game up lately and are looking for some more information about it's development swing by the 2PP Youtube channel and check it out.

Now to get back to saving New Marais...

A few years back, we abandoned our official YouTube account in favor of the greener, more cleanly compressed pastures of Vimeo. Since then, YouTube has made some significant strides in the right direction so we thought it'd be worth it to knock the dust off that old login and make our most noteworthy content available for that site's considerable audience.

Chief among said content is the inclusion of Reformat The Planet in its entirety with all new, real-time Annotations. We were really excited to take full advantage of this feature and went out of our way to pack this version of the film with all the trivia and backstories that never came across in the original cut or the DVD's commentary track. So, even if you've already gone through both of those, we've still got something new for ya.

You play Minecraft, and you get that there is more to it then just a simple game. We want to respect your tremendous vote of confidence by making sure that every extra dollar is invested into improving some aspect of the final product. It could mean anything from being able to interview more subjects to adding international subtitles for the benefit of the game's global community. Whatever it is, we want it to add to your experience.

Production of the doc will continue through 2011 and into early 2012. We will be traveling to the Mojang offices in Sweden multiple times during the course of filming, as well as numerous other locations around the world to talk to people that have been influenced by the game. The reward items are being put into production and everything is going smoothly.

If you missed a chance to back the Kickstarter project, stay tuned for info on how to pre-order the standard edition release.

New Merch in 2 Player Store

We now have copies of "Reformat the Planet" in the 2 Player Productions merch shop, as well as a few different bundle options for those looking to pick up some of our other material.

The Blip 06 DVD features performances from everyone at the 2006 Blip Festival, the main event featured in "Reformat the Planet". This was our first product release back in the day so it's a little rough around the edges, but we don't have many copies left and once it's gone it's gone for good. It's a great piece of history for anyone interested in seeing how the very first Blip went down.

The Blip 07 DVD that followed was bumped up to a 2 disc set, again featuring performances from everyone at the festival, but this time we really went nuts with the special features. Tons of bonus videos paint a picture of the NY scene's growth post Blip 06, with studio sessions and performances from events in New York and Philadelphia. We also have a full year's worth of Pulsewave ROM fliers from NO-CARRIER, multi-angle performance videos from Blip 07 (edit it yourself in real time!), and a host of weird and confusing Easter eggs you may wish you never took the trouble to find.

For Blip 08 we went in a whole new direction by deciding to focus entirely on the aural aspect of the show and releasing a 2 disc live album. The Blip 08 live album is seamlessly presented as a complete experience from start to finish, and stands as what might be the best produced live chip music album available.

Fans of chip music new and old couldn't go wrong with any of these products, and now you can get them all together for the special price of $40.

A special thanks to everyone for the warm reception to the announcement of our Minecraft project this weekend. The Doc is in post production right now and we're aiming to release it for free sometime in February (a valentines gift to Mojang?).

Expect the doc to ultimately be twenty minutes in length and depending on the reception when we release, we may return to Mojang in Stockholm to continue expanding on it. The story of Mojang studios has only just begun, and there are still aspects of the studio that could be explored. The content we have now takes place during the first week of the studios formation, which is something rarely captured on film and we're grateful to Mojang for giving us permission to be there.

That's all the information we can release for now, thanks again to everyone for being so excited about the doc! It's a real thrill for us to be working on it. Mojang is an incredible team of brilliant people, and i'm sure we'll be enjoying excellent games from them for a long time to come.

Uncharted 3: The Reveal

If you happened to turn on your computer this past weekend, you know that Naughty Dog officially announced the next installment in their massively successful "Uncharted" franchise, "Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception." Over the past few months, we've been spending some time at their studio in Santa Monica, covering various aspects of production leading up to the game's first trailer.

The first half of this short documentary features interviews with the dev team as they discuss the pressures of creating a sequel to one of the most critically-acclaimed games in recent years. You'll also be treated to a glimpse behind the closed doors of the motion-capture and ADR process. And, in keeping with the grand tradition, the doc sports an all chipmusic soundtrack courtesy of Bear & Walrus, minusbaby, failotron, and Nathan Meunier.

Click here to view part 1. Look for the second half early next year!

We'd also like to express our gratitude for the overwhelmingly positive reception the piece has received so far and are especially thankful to Naughty Dog for opening their doors to our cameras. Best studio ever.

Fantastic Arcade/ Fantastic Fest (Austin, TX)

Since 2005, the founders of Fantastic Fest(Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News and Alamo Drafthouse mastermind Tim League, to name a few) have dedicated themselves to putting on what is arguably the most fun film festival you can attend in this country. Where other festivals eventually devolve into a distribution meat market that Paris Hilton goes to get her picture taken, Fantastic Fest celebrates the world’s best genre films and allows Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA to present legendary martial-arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Did I saw award? I meant sword. He gave him a sword.

This year, the Fantastic team decided to level up and introduce the Fantastic Arcade -- a concurrent showcase for indie developers who, in short, make video games that rule. Not to be outdone by its older brother, Fantastic Arcade also comes complete with panels, competitions, playable demos, and film screenings relevant to its cause. Our chipmusic documentary, Reformat the Planet, had the honor of joining this lineup so I (Asif) went down to Austin to check out the proceedings and represent the film on 2PP’s behalf.

Unfortunately, the date of the screening was changed late in the game so I ended up arriving in town a few days later in accordance with the original schedule. Still, the experience was an invaluable one. Getting to meet and interact with some of our favorite developers was a real treat but, more than that, the entire week just reinforced how much the divide between independent films and video games was narrowing. My personal highlight of the week was actually a moderated conversation between Braid creator, Jonathan Blow, and Timecrimes director, Nacho Vigalondo, where the two discussed the relationship between their respective fields. I could go on for pages about what they went over so I’ll simply say that a rich and fascinating history stretches out before us and we look forward to documenting as much of it as we can get our hands on.

The arcade came to a fitting end earlier this week with Austin’s premier chipmusic event, Datapop. The sets from Rainbow Dragon Eyes, Fuckjazzforaminute, glomag, and IAYD all killed and I encourage everyone reading this to do everything in your power to attend this Fantastic week next year. You can thank me in person.

Over the last few weeks, we've had the privilege of speaking at length with our good friends from Fangamer for two of their regular podcast sessions. While these may not be our first interviews about Reformat the Planet or Penny Arcade: The Series, we do consider them to be the most comprehensive discussions we've had about the projects that have come to define us and other matters near and dear to our collective heart -- namely chipmusic, filmmaking, and video games.

2 Player Productions at PAX Prime 2010

This September marks the return of the annual Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle. Most of the 2 Player crew will be attending PAX again this year, minus Asif, who will be living his own “Lost in Translation” style adventure in Japan for Blip Festival Tokyo. We wish him well on his mystical journey to the East.

Once again we can be found manning our booth in the Bandland area, serving fresh copies of the Reformat the Planet DVD, hot off the press. The good people of Fangamer will also be in attendance on the show floor itself, with many of the beautiful objects featured on their online store available for sale in person.

Those of you hungry for more low bit paraphernalia will be pleased to find Adam from Attract Mode and Matt from Fort90 stocking our booth with a selection of fine shirts, zines, music, and other goods of a squarish nature.

Aside from offering a number of unique products to the adventurous consumer, we’ll also be found hosting a few events taking place in the regular PAX programming. Come see us on Friday at 5 pm in the Serpent Theater for a special screening of an episode from “Penny Arcade The Series,” followed by an open Q&A with our crew!

Following that, we’ll be hosting a screening of the entire Penny Arcade web series spanning two nights. The screening is on Friday from 10 pm to 11 pm in the Raven Theater and 10pm to 11pm on Saturday also in the Raven Theater. Catch up on Mike and Jerry’s hilarious office antics in a way you never have before -- in a room full of excited fans!

We’ll see you at PAX Prime, and please feel free to stop by the booth and say hi. Just don’t ask us about the joke...

Reports are coming in that people are starting to receive their Reformat the Planet pre-orders from Fangamer. Just this Monday we received our bundle here at 2PP manor (yes we ordered our own movie), and even having known what fangamer had been up too we were still surprised in the best way possible. The guys at fangamer have a real love for what they do, and it shows through all the products they create. We couldn't be happier with this partnership. I mean, come on. The bag the t-shirt came in was decorated. I love it.

Reformat the Planet Orders Now Shipping w/ Paper Craft GB!

Before we get down to today’s news, we’d like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone in New York that braved the rainfall and their own Sunday night torpor to make it out to the Reformat the Planet DVD release party at Le Poisson Rouge. No Carrier, Glomag, Bit Shifter, and Nullsleep were all in rare form -- delighting the audience with some new weaponry (guitars! cinderblocks! uh...newsboy hats?), new versions of old favorites (complete with appropriately timed cheers of recognition), and, in the case of Nullsleep, a final (?!) live performance of chipmusic classic, “Her Lazer Light Eyes.” It was the perfect cap to the past four years we’ve devoted to this scene, and we couldn’t be more grateful for every opportunity and friend the experience has afforded us.

Right, so if you still haven't picked up your copy of the film, be sure to check out all the awesome bundles Fangamer is offering over at their shop. Orders should be shipping out by the time you read these very words, so the wait for your heap of choice chip swag shouldn't be too excruciating.

For those that feel Fangamer hasn't already thrown in enough incredible extras (but wait, there’s more!), kindly peep these ridiculously awesome paper-craft Game Boys that will come packaged with each order from their store. It even comes inscribed with your name and order number.

Sweet, right? A huge thanks to our friends over at Cubeecraft for putting these together. They’ve managed to make the little grey brick look quite attractive in its paper form. If you decide to use them towards some particularly clever end, please send us pictures.

Each Reformat the Planet order from Fangamer will ship with a randomly selected paper GB and RTP button -- proof that some things in life are indeed free, so long as they are made from paper and require some assembly. This is why you can (and will) have nice things.

The wait is finally over. On August 24th, Reformat the Planet is coming to DVD as a 2-disc set fully loaded with fresh content and tons of bonus material. Featuring a painstakingly restored audio mix, this never-before-seen cut of the film is supplemented by a brand new short, RTP 1.5, that accounts for some of the intervening years since the end of principal photography. Together, they now represent 2 Player Productions' definitive vision for the project.

In addition to filmmaker commentary tracks for both features, the DVDs also include deleted scenes, exclusive interviews, chipmusic software tutorials, music videos, and a beautiful collector's booklet, to name just a few.

2playerproductions.com has lay dormant for close to a year now while we worked on the Penny Arcade web series. With the PA series coming to a close and some major projects on the horizon, we’ve cleaned up the site and made it much easier for you to navigate. You’ll find our complete body of work cataloged under the Projects tab.
Sweet, we made it to our second post of the year! So we're back in Seattle for this year's Penny Arcade Expo, one of the country's largest gaming conventions open to the general public. Last year, we came to screen one project, Reformat the Planet. This year, we're here to create a new one.

We have to remain fairly tight-lipped about it all at the moment but I can tell you that we'll be trailing PA masterminds, Mike & Jerry, for the entire weekend -- documenting their interactions with the vendors, volunteers, and, most importantly, their fans. We'll also be covering all of this year's musical performances (including our dear friends Anamanaguchi so be on the lookout for some good old fashioned 2PP-style concert footage. We saw the performance area come together today and it looks unspeakably badass. With about 75,000 people expected to attend, we're looking forward to an exciting weekend.

Big ups to everyone at Penny Arcade and all the Expo staff. We've had a great time so far and everyone has been extremely generous and helpful. We're really looking forward to sharing this material with all of you once we figure out what form it's going to take. I have to be up and ready to go at 7am to catch all the kids lining up early at the convention center so I'll stop here for now.
We're back. We never really went anywhere, we've just been so busy making this incredible live album release, we didn't have time to update the site. That or we forgot how to update the site. Take your pick.

Blip 2008 Live is now available to purchase in physical and digital forms. You can also stream the entire album online for free at bandcamp.

The site is currently in the process of receiving a complete overhaul. Other big things are in the works, including our second year at PAX in September, a cross country move to a new base of operations in Portland, Oregon, and some big new projects that will take us in a new direction.

We'll be back online soon, better then ever. Until then, kick back and enjoy the sounds of Blip 2008 Live, and keep in touch with our twitter feed.

In a move that is sure to split the tight pants off of hipsters everywhere, influential internet outfit Pitchfork Media has finally discovered chip music. To make up for lost time, they've decided to stream the entirety of our Reformat the Planet documentary off their site. The catch: It's only available for one week, so head there now and you can say you knew about chip music before all those hipsters on your block did.

Here's the link- Reformat on Pitchfork

So once again, we managed to miss our weekly video update. While some may think we merely set ourselves up for failure, i can attest that this time we had some really good excuses. A whole bunch. Seriously.

Better late then never, we're rolling out a new mini-series of videos, the "080808". We where lucky enough to show up in time to catch a few performances at the 080808 outdoor show in Philadelphia, hosted by our friend No-Carrier. The first video is more on the abstract side and features the Nullsleep track "Angle of Reflection".

Reformat the PAX!

West Coast Premier of Reformat the Planet at Penny Arcade Expo

Reformat the Planet will be showing at the 2008 Penny Arcade Expo(PAX) in Seattle, Washington. This will be our west-coast premier, and perhaps the largest venue RTP has had the privilege to play at. With attendance over the years steadily rising to the thirty seven thousand at last years event, PAX has become the ultimate destination for gamers the world over. RTP will be introduced to a new audience that's bigger then ever, and we're all very grateful that the guys at PA liked our movie enough to want to show it to their friends.

We'll be joined in Seattle by our pals Anamanaguchi, who are performing as part of PAX's legendary live concert event. Having previously given new life to video game cover bands and the nerd-core rap movement, PAX will be opening their door for the first time to chip music. Little do they realize the breaching charges placed on the door by the guch', set to blow that fucker to splinters right before they storm in and clear the room.

In theory, you should be able to find us for the duration of the event populating a merch booth packed with all sort of excellent 8bitpeoples swag. What's much more likely to happen is that we'll find an excuse to stick Anamanaguchi in the booth and sneak off to play Mega Man 9 and Bionic Commando. So if you come by to make a purchase in good will and find the station manned by scruffy-looking musician types with colorful t-shirts and tight pants, don't panic. They are in control.

To celebrate our next big screening(and make up for last weeks missing video) we've added three clips of Reformat the Planet to the site to give everyone a better idea of whats in store for them. PAIN!

No, not really. Unless you find pulse pounding live performances and slick 8-bit ascetics painful, then be sure to take your medication before clicking the link.

As of this moment, the time slot for the PAX screening is still TBA. In the meantime, you should be concerned with putting your body through an intense physical and mental training routine in preparation for the three most jam-packed days of awesomeness in human history.

2PP risked life and limb to bring you this brand new, unreleased Nullsleep track, "Shadows in the Sky", performed for the first time live at the May Pulsewave in NYC. The video was filmed entirely by a secret camera hidden discreetly in Asif's giant novelty hat, and then smuggled out of the venue in Paul Owen's digestive track.

This tremendous breach in the Great Sleep's security will most certainly be met with terrible, searing retaliation, but we here at 2PP are committed to bringing you the deepest darkest secrets from the seedy underworld of chip music, whatever the cost. We'll just blame it all on an intern anyway. I mean, that's what their there for, right?

Next week: Secret footage of Glomag's negative energy weapon tests from deep within his vast subterranean fortress. Be there!

Big news this week is "Reformat The Planet" being accepted to screen at the Melbourne International Film Festival in Australia. This will be the overseas premier of RTP, and everyone at 2PP is honored to have the film screen at Australia's largest and most prestigious festival.

Unfortunately, the 2PP crew will not be attending the festival due to the prohibitive cost of international air fair. We however send our collective spirit along with the betaSP transfer, and encourage any native Australians with a taste for big little sounds to check out one of the freshest music documentaries in this or any hemisphere.

"Blip Festival: Reformat The Planet" will be screening 9:30 PM on Monday, July 28th, at the Kino Theater.

The new video this week has been a long time coming, featuring a January 08 Pulsewave performance by Seed AI, brain child of 2PP's own web designer Brett Lefferts. This performance also features Brett's good friend and master of percussion, Dan Gottesman.

This is the first of two video projects developed for Seed AI, the second still in production with a tentative release date of early fall 2008.

Having recognized that we're not the only people in the world making chip videos, we set out to try and gather the scattered resources of the internet into one place for your viewing pleasure. You'll find live shows, music videos, graphic demos, and all sort of bit-craft. Be sure to drop in and see what the wide world of chip music has to offer, or even better, join up, grab a camera, and post some videos of chip shows in your area!

2PP would also like to unveil their latest secret weapon in the fight against over-modulated sound, shiny new audio tech Gabe Liberti. Gabe's utter remorseless domination of sound waves can be experienced first hand in the Blip Festival 2007 Bit Shifter video.
